As parents of 5 teens, including 2 boys with special needs, we have a personal affinity and deep appreciation for nutrition. Our son Jace has Autism and our eldest has Epilepsy. Jace had a terrible diet for years (sensory issues) which caused so many problems in his growth and behavior. It was because of Jace’s Autism that we curated our healthy, fit-food brand that focuses on delicious, nutritiously balanced, high-protein products such as pancake mix, muffins, and soft-baked bars.
Through our struggle with Jace’s diet, we realized that we can’t take food for granted. Those that have access to healthy food, learn to appreciate it and those who don’t have access to it, don’t have a choice. We wanted to help families to have a choice.
During a snow day last month when our 5 kids were home, we were watching our local news that featured a local school who opened a resource hub (empowerment center) for students and families in need to help simplify lives for their families living in a neighborhood in transition. They talked about how they can’t close the doors for snow days because it closes the door to a decent meal for most of their students and they keep the school open so that the children can have full bellies and challenged minds. This melted our hearts. Though this is only chipping away at a fraction of children who go hungry every day, we have to do what we can, where we can.
The Wyatt Academy’s goal is to give back to their students and families who are in need. The empowerment center is home to a laundromat, a clothing boutique, a computer lab, a grocery area where students and families can ‘shop’ for food/snacks to take home if they need it, all at no cost for families through partnerships with local businesses, like FlapJacked. We are super proud that we have the means and ability to give where we can.
What are you doing to help your community? We encourage you to reach out and see where you can help! Reach out to a local charity or underprivileged school near you to see where you can help. Even a little bit goes a long way!
